As a result, the “handling” game of rugby remained beyond the purview of the newly constituted Football Association (FA). Indeed, by 1870, the FA had banned any ball touching save that of the goalie.
The new regulations were not fully recognized in Britain, and many clubs, particularly in and around Sheffield, continued to follow their own set of rules. Although this northern English city was the location of the FA’s first provincial club, it was also the birthplace of the Sheffield Football Association, the progenitor of succeeding county organizations, in 1867. In 1866, Sheffield and London’s clubs played two matches against each other, and a year later, a match matching a Middlesex club versus a Kent and Surrey club was played under the amended regulations. In 1871, 15 FA clubs agreed to participate in a cup tournament and contribute to the purchase of a trophy.
By 1877, the British organizations had agreed on a standard rule, 43 clubs were competing, and the London clubs’ initial supremacy had waned.
The names would inevitably be abbreviated. In the 1880s, linguistically imaginative students at Oxford University distinguished between the games of “rugger” (rugby football) and “ace soccer” (association football). The latter term was reduced even further to “soccer” (occasionally written “soccer”), and the name rapidly traveled beyond campus. In the United Kingdom, however, “soccer” was never more than a moniker. By the twentieth century, rugby football had earned the right to be called just football, whereas association football had gained the right to be called simply football.
Meanwhile, in the late nineteenth century, a sport evolved in the United States that combined aspects of rugby and association football. It quickly became more popular than any of them. Gridiron football was the complete name, but most people didn’t bother with the first word. As a result, Yankee football game players began to ask about their sport like soccer. The United States Football Association, founded in the 1910s as the main organizational body of American soccer, changed its name to the United States Soccer Football Association in 1945, and it eventually dropped the word “Football” entirely. Soccer has become more than just a moniker.
Other nations where the term “soccer” is often used include those with rival forms of football, such as the United States. For example, gridiron soccer is well-liked in Canada, Gaelic football is popular in Ireland, and Australian rules football is popular in Australia (which comes from rugby).
